1984 - Third book in a row - Day 19 #100HappyDays #FirstKindleExperience
1984 <pause> probably the most disturbing book I have read so far. Yes, I finally concluded on the word disturbing, I was thinking for at least an hour or so to figure out the word to describe the emotions I felt after I read "The End". I was like really, is it really the end? did I miss some connotation? or is it like one of those complex English comprehensions in CAT or GMAT where I missed some hidden meaning or haven't I read properly. I saw at least 6% of book left. I turned the page, I saw Appendix, I kept reading, it was about the "The Newsweek", its vocabulary and so on. But I wasn't much interested. I waiting for at least some kind of author's note like the Agatha Christie book I read a few days back. But, no the book ends. I wanted a conclusion or some other ending at least. Alas, there were none. That's it, there were no second party at all. Big Brother, GoldStein, Inner Party everyone are the same. There was just one leader and one party and a Big brother with telescreens staring at your face in that imaginary world of that book. Now that I think, I realize that this makes the book all the more scary and horrifying. It probably took the disturbing emotion from 10 to 100. Scraped through blogs, videos and figured out there exists a movie based on this book but nothing which could soothe me. Firstly, 1000 Kudos to such an amazing author, George Orwell, who could write such a book. Secondly, thanks for helping me discover a altogether a new zoner, dystopian books. This book goes beyond the sufferings of World War II. In case of WWII, I at least knew there was a happy ending, but here there was none. Finally, let me delve into the book.
War is Peace.
Freedom is Slavery.
Ignorance is Strength.
I think these three lines can summarize the book, the best. War is peace, there is no war between the three states in the world; Oceania, Eastasia and Eurasia, everything is imaginary. It is a delusion to keep the society in order.
Freedom is slavery. It means to be free is to work for the party, follow the party, and worship the party. In short, be a slave to the party.
Ignorance is Strength. The people are always ignorant of the real happiness or real freedom. By the continuous repetition from telescreens and conditioning of minds, they know there is scarcity of razor blades or shoe laces. But they also know Party can help them and has abundance.
2+2=5, writes Winston in his diary. Literally everything is plotted. Absolute zero freedom. Just when I started feeling Julia and Winston were in love and were secretly escaping the horror of the world in their secret bedroom, I realize even that was plotted. They were busted from the telescreen behind that portrait and by that old shopkeeper. Love doesn't exist. In the end, when Winston holds her waist, he feels nothing. They sit on iron chairs and tell each other I wanted to inflict the pain in Room 101 and then leave. I was BLANK.............................. Not sure how to digest this. We live with hope, freedom, love and just these necessities doesn't exist in that world. Now that I think, I am not sure how many things do we take as granted!
CHILL
"The one who controls the past controls the future. The one who controls the present, controls the past." This is beyond the rules of Science and Logic I can think of. Past is erased and rewritten carefully to validate the future. Once a person is vaporized <dead> all his records and cleaned. Who could imagine a world like that. Only George Orwell. Awestruck with his imagination.
"If you keep a secret, you may hide it from yourself." Put that little secret you got in your memory hole. Human minds are being controlled. Parents love their children even when they know those kids would be the ones who would turn them to the party. Such an irony. Father is proud that his kid jailed him. I always wondered about the power of mind and human endurance. Then this book shows that in the end when you reach that level 10 of torture you give up. Just give up. It might actually be true of any human being.
"He had won the victory over himself. He loves Big Brother."
My first dystopian novel. It takes depression to an altogether new level. Definitely a must read. (5/5)
